Transport & Driving in Adelaide
Getting around Adelaide is efficient, but the pricing system and transfer rules can be tricky for newcomers. Here is everything you need to know to avoid fines and save money.
Adelaide Metro: Tickets & Fares
Adelaide uses a unified system (Buses, Trains, Trams). You have three ways to pay:
- Tap and Pay (Easiest)Use your Credit/Debit card or Smartwatch directly on the validator. Note: This only works for Regular Fares. If you are a student, you must use a metroCARD to get the discount.
- metroCARD (Cheapest)A physical card you buy for $5 and top up. It offers the lowest fares and is required for Concession/Student discounts.
- Adelaide Metro Tap-and-Pay AppComing soon/Rolling out in 2026 for digital metroCARDs.
Fare Table (Approximate 2026 Pricing)
| Ticket Type | Peak (Before 9AM / After 3PM) | Off-Peak (9AM - 3PM Weekdays) |
|---|---|---|
| Tap & Pay / metroCARD | $4.20 | $2.30 |
| Student (metroCARD only) | $1.40 | $1.40 |
| Daytrip (Unlimited) | $11.70 | $11.70 |
Your fare includes unlimited transfers across all buses, trains, and trams for 2 hours from the first time you tap on.
Free City Services (The "Free Zone")
You don't need to pay if you stay within the city center:
- •Free Trams: Between South Terrace and the Entertainment Centre, and the branch to Botanic Gardens.
- •Free Buses (98 & 99): These "City Loops" run every 15-30 minutes and connect the City with North Adelaide.
Trains & Trams vs. Buses
Best for long distances (e.g., Adelaide to Gawler or Seaford). Fast, but check the timetable as they run every 30 mins off-peak.
A unique Adelaide feature! Buses enter a guided track and travel at 100km/h from the City to Tea Tree Plaza in minutes.
The "Glenelg Tram" is iconic. It takes you from the City to the beach (Glenelg) in about 35 minutes.
Taxis & Rideshare
- Uber & Ola: Widely available and generally cheaper than taxis.
- 13cabs: The main taxi provider. Good for pre-booking airport transfers.
