Government Services
To complete life admin tasks, you will likely need to visit a government service centre. In Australia, government services are split between State (South Australia) and Federal (National) levels.
Service SA (State Level)
This is the South Australian state government network. You visit Service SA for things that are related only to living in SA.
- Driver's Licenses: Applying for or transferring a license.
- Vehicle Registration (Rego): If you buy a car, you pay the yearly registration here.
- Proof of Age Card: Your official photo ID.
Services Australia / Centrelink (Federal Level)
This is the Australian Federal Government. Services Australia handles nationwide systems.
- Medicare: The public health system (visit their centres to enroll and get your green card).
- Centrelink: Social security payments. Some permanent residents or citizens may be eligible for job seeker allowances, family tax benefits, or child care subsidies. Note: Temporary visa holders usually cannot access Centrelink money.
MyGov:
We highly recommend setting up a myGov account as soon as you have a tax file number and Medicare. It connects your ATO (tax), Medicare, and Centrelink accounts all in one digital portal.
